From a brief appearance in Moscow at the end of August 2005

The sign found stuck to the window after my Italian guests.

While a pet rat seems to be taken in good humour by travellers from English speaking countries and European North, the southerners (France and down) find his presence shocking.

Same in the daytime. I'm undecided at this point which will be the "official" picture. Night-time is more stylish, the one taken in the day is more revealing.

Hint to amateur photographers: Use flash when taking pictures of objects against bright background.

Lunch has passed away on September 12, 2005, at the age of about three. This is his grave at my dacha in Dubrovki.

Sheremetyevo 2, staff cafeteria on the 4th floor. Power outlet, $1 beer, $4-5 for a full meal, and a view onto the take off field. The best thing is the presence of a couple of electric outlets to power your laptop.

New photos of the Tretyakovka Cafe, the supreme example of the "Old Moscow" type establishment of the sort that you can only find these days in St. Petersburg that I would detest totally if not for the food and drink scene.

New Riga highway, 50km north-west from Moscow. A roadside stall about ,  specializing in roast pork on a stick. On my first request vegetables were prepared in a similar manner. This does not always happens and often you will be told "nothing available" when in fact there is plenty of stuff for vegetarians but with every passing year my vegetarian habits seem to be less of a problem for me and others.

"Firm Polus-M"

Pyatnitskaya 3/4
will perform
the following services
etc. etc.,

The actual list of services is at the very bottom, in small letters.

--> Understanding the culture  on www.oldmanfriday.com ?  The point is that in the Russian communication style the larger category proceeds the smaller.

Envelopes are addresses the same way: Country, city, street, name. Names and titles:

Professor Doctor Ivanov P.I. rather than  P.I. Ivanov, MD, professor.

Note Ivanov P.I. as the typically Russia sequence, rather than P.I. Ivanov

Group, family, larger hierarchy come first. Specific and individual last. Welcome to a society where "I" is but a recent development, and the tendency is strong to fuse with a larger entity.

Here I tried to capture the idea of bringing a name out of obscurity. Wish the leaves where yellow. This photo will probably illustrate something like assistance in locating graves or arranging for grave upkeep.
The few symbols of the Soviet era that survived the last 15 years are now being restored or at least freshly painted.
