Moscow, end of August 2005

The sign found stuck to the window after my Italian guests. While a pet rat seems to be taken in good humour by travellers from English speaking countries and European North, the southerners (France and down) find his presence shocking.

Same in the daytime. I'm undecided at this point which will be the "official" picture. Night-time is more stylish, the one taken in the day is more revealing.

Lunch has passed away on September 12, 2005, at the age of about three. This is his grave at my dacha in Dubrovki.

Sheremetyevo 2, staff cafeteria on the 4th floor. A free power outlet, $1 beer, $4-5 for a full meal, and a view onto the take off field.

New photos of the Tretyakovka Cafe, the supreme example of the "Old Moscow" type establishment.

New Riga highway, 50km north-west from Moscow. A roadside stall about ,  specializing in roast pork on a stick. Vegetables, however, can be prepared in a similar manner. Vegetarians won't be left hungry. Use for the Vegetarian page.

Workshop
"Firm Polus-M"
located at
Pyatnitskaya 3/4
will perform
the following services
etc. etc.,

The actual list of services is at the very bottom, in small letters.  Probably to be used for the "Understanding the culture" page on www.oldmanfriday.com. Envelopes are addresses the same way: Country, city, street, name. Names and titles: Professor Doctor Ivanov P.I. rather than  P.I. Ivanov, MD, professor. Group, family, larger hierarchy come first. Anything specific and individual last. Welcome to a society where "I" is but a recent development, and where life is defined with a drive to identify and fuse with a larger entity.

Here I tried to capture the idea of bringing a name out of obscurity. Wish the leaves where yellow. This photo will probably illustrate something like assistance in locating graves or arranging for grave upkeep.

The few symbols of the Soviet era that survived the last 15 years are now being restored or at least freshly painted. Zamoskvorechye district of Moscow. September 12, 2005
