Происхождение герба связано с легендой о старухе, которая якобы во время нашествия Орды укрылась в пещере и осталась в живых - единственная во всем поселении. С этой же легендой нередко связывают и название города. Герб города Старица был учрежден 10 октября 1780 года.

The old woman depicted on the coat-of-arms is said to have been the only survivor when Staritsa was overun by Mongol hordes in 1300-something.  The name of the city, which translates into modern Russian as "ancient woman", is thought by some to have originated in this story.  The coat-of-arms was made official on the 10th of October, 1780.
