None of them speak English but they can call me and I'll explain where you are to be taken. By default they will deliver you to Ryblovo, across the river from my dacha, and call me or my neighbour Nicolas to get you with a paddle boat. Just make sure you have on you my numbers, 8-910-932-5546 and 8-916-117-1527, when travelling to Staritsa. In fact it is a good idea to keep them handy at all times while travelling in Russia.

Some more-or-less fixed rates:

100 roubles ($3.5) to Ryblovo

350 ($12) to Dubrovki, Station Staritsa, or Rodnya

750 ($25) to Tver

For other trips the rate will be based on 30-40 cents/km. I have not seen nor heard of foreigner rip-off and other ugly taxi tricks (see www.moscowdrivers.net/tricks_n_scam.htm) in Staritsa. Nor in Tver, so far.

One of the local peasants supplements his meager income by working as a cab, and apparently is able to successfully compete with motorized taxis.
