All materials on Staritsa, Tver, and other cities between Moscow and St. Petersburg, or anything other place where you may end up while travelling between the two capitals, eg. the Golden Ring cities, are being moved to www.staritsa.info. Pages on Staritsa itself and Tver are pretty full. Volokolamks, Zubtsov, and Rzhev have some content. Novgorod, Staraya Russia, Valday and others are coming up. Visit www.staritsa.info and let me entice you into travelling between the two capitals through small towns and villages to see a cross-section of the country. Less tiring yet more intense than the famous Trans-Siberian. A special treat is the visit to my dacha, where three gentle home-raise horses are waiting to give you memorable rides in the hills over the Volga River. If, however, you have your mind set on spending a week on a train, among chain-smoking Russian, loud Americans, tense Brits and blissful Australians, with no access to proper washing facilities, I recommend Olesya, herself from Tomsk, as your Siberian travel expert. This page, www.unclepasha.com/staritsa_eng.htm will not be updated. As of February 9, 2005, it seems like all materials with the exception of the CHARITY section have been moved to the new site with minimal losses. Enjoy. Can't find it? Write to paul_voytinsky@yahoo.com Know something that should be on www.staritsa.info? Send it to me or post it on www.staritsa.info/guestbook.htm Pasha |

I have a "dacha" 5 miles down the Volga from Staritsa..Country estate... Tourist farming.. . [more]

Staritsa was founded in the 13th century to serve the needs of a monastery, and to these days it remains a city of churches. Some are functioning, others are still in ruins, but the trend is to restore churches to their former significance.
Ancient routes connecting Moskovia with Northern Europe... [more]

Staritsa, with its picturesque countryside, is still very little known as a tourist destination. The city and the whole Upper Volga region will be appreciated by those who enjoy simple and authentic travel.
Car, bus, or train. A simple trip or a tour through land full of dramatic history.
From a 6 hour train ride to a 3 day adventure tour
Banking
Do as much
as you banking at home or in Moscow. The most you'll be able to do in
Staritsa is exchange dollars or Euros into roubles at rate that is 2-3%
less than in Moscow. And of course they want the bills to be fresh from
the press. The bank is setting up a system to give MC cash advances. The
bank is near the market square / the babushka monument / hotel.Real estate
Churches

St. Elias Church by the bus station
The Trinity Convent around which the city developed back in the 13th-15th centuries is being re-established under the leadership of charismatic Father Hermogenus.
Travel to the village of Krasnoye to see a highly unusual, for Russia, church in the Gothic style build by of of the famous architects of the the construction of St. Petersburg period. A page on this church is coming up.

Horse riding
My esteemed colleague and competitor Sergei is really into horses, unlike me, who keeps them as pets because they are have that cute way of moving their ears. Read about him at http://horses-tver.narod.ru/

Horses of local breeds adapt to
temperature extremes by developing glove-like overgrowth over their
ears and other extremities. Sheep followed another evolutionary
strategy of carrying small electric heaters with them.

Craftsmen and Artisans
We are presently working on a piece of equipment (a boiling vessel and holders) for making curved wooden parts for Misha, a carriage maker from Moscow, in Dubrovki. Check back for details.

Medical supplies for the hospital
3-4
years ago Ed Mattson of
www.hopefromwings.org had us deliver two boxes of written off
medical supplies to the Staritsa Hospital. I estimated the market value
of the stuff and was amazed how much could be packed in one cardboard
box. If you have access to standard medical supplies that are nearing
the end of their shelf life, and can get them for free, sending them
here may make every sense.
