INTERVIEW WITH AN ECONOMIST
What’s your occupation? / What do you do?
I am an economist. Or, perhaps, it is more precise if I describe myself as a professional business manager. Something like an MBA (Master of Business Administration) in Canada.
Tell me about your brother.
My brother lives in Montreal. He is a mechanic, and he is doing very well. In Russia he was an auto racer and he took part in numerous competitions, and won some awards. He no longer participates in competitions, but he knows how to work with modern complex high-performance engines. He came to Canada two years ago, and is doing very well.
Why do you want to leave Russia?
We have a son who will need good education. We know how strong the education system is in Canada. Also, our son is a great fan of Canadian sports. Canada offers lots of opportunities to people who are willing to work hard. We are a young and mobile family, and we need room to grow. Canada is the country were, we believe, our energy and professionalism will be both in our interest and in that of the society at large.
Why do you want to come to Canada?
First, I, as a business mangers who knows the ship-building, chemical and textile industry, expect to find gainful employment in Canada. Our son will be raised with Canadian values, receive good education, and will become a quality person. My husband, a civil engineer, will thrive in Canadian environment. He has lots of experience building in harsh sub-arctic permafrost conditions. Most of undeveloped and under-populated areas of Canada are up North. Also the railroad industry is enjoying a revival – an my husband Sergei has particular expertise in building railroads, tunnels, and bridges.
What do you expect Canada to be like?
It is a stable country where hard work is appreciated and rewarded. It is a country where you can save for the future knowing that the fruits of your labour will not disappear.
What do you see yourself doing in five years from now?
In five years from now I expect to have be fully integrated in Canada both socially and professionally. I will have a good job. Will have no language problems whatsoever. My son will be finishing his high school and preparing to go to university. Alexander will be working as a civil engineer or, at the very least, a highly qualified construction supervisor.
What is the source of your money?
All of it is earned. Even in Russia we are valued professionals and are paid quite well, by local standards….
