RESUMES AND LETTERS OF REFERENCE

Resume is NOT an absolutely required document to submit in support of your application for immigration to Canada. Nor do you have to bring it to the interview.

I do suggest, however, that you do start your interview preparation with developing your resume because it would help you in organizing and focusing your thoughts and words. Having a good resume developed may also prompt you to start your job-hunting.

I sifted through a pile of old resumes in my computer and elsewhere and put some of them here for your consideration.

What to do:
  1. Review these resumes.
  2. Find the type closest to you.
  3. Find the layout you like.
  4. Review sample resumes critically, suggest improvements
  5. Design your resume based on these samples if you like.
  6. Carefully add content.
  7. Enhance your resume.
  8. Send it to me for editing

Examples of resumes. These are samples of real resumes that happened to kick around, which are not necessarily patterns to be imitates. Most of these have been rendered unanimous. My comments are in square brackets.

Letters of recommendation. These are is a related genre of document. Since Russian ones often lack content sound quite stilted, here are some good samples so that you have an idea what to ask of your employer.

Types of resume layouts:

  1. Chronological
  2. By subject

Chronological resumes are most suitable of your career follows a discernible vector. If you have little work experience, or the jobs you has don't fall into a pattern that points somewhere, use the by-subject type.

While most resumes given here are chronological, there is a couple arranged by subject.

A good resume must/may contain:

  1. Contact information
  2. A clear statement of what you are looking for
  3. A concise statement of professional profile
  4. Education
  5. Information on additional training
  6. Professional skills and abilities
  7. Other skills and abilities
  8. Experience
  9. Notable achievements
  10. Demonstrated readiness to make a contribution
  11. Personal information (optional)
  12. References

Cover letters. A resume is usually accompanies by a cover letter. I haven't found any cover letters in my archive, but practicing in writing them would make a good exercise.

Application forms. The same applies to filling out application forms. These two topics are not a "standard" part of the interview preparation process, but are available and recommended as an extra option. Типичная бумага, которую вам сунут в любом заведении, куда вы сунетесь со словами "Hi, I'm looking for a job" - ЗДЕСЬ.
