Back to Vegetarian Moscow ~ Restaurants and hangouts
Pasha-
Here is the Indian food info, as reported to me by my roommate:
1) Tandoor - Address: 2 Vosnesensky Prospekt - Phone: 312 38 86
The food here is good, but not exactly mouth-wateringly delicious. Think of it as Indian food at the quality and price you'd expect from a restaurant in, say, Chicago. Expect to pay about $10-20 a meal. The best thing about this restaurant is its central location - very near St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Astoria Hotel, and walking distance from almost all of the downtown tourist attractions.
2) Svagat - Address: 91 Bolshoi Prospekt, V.O. - Phone: 322 21 11
Unbelievably delicious food in a surprisingly subdued and friendly atmosphere (you might start to forgget you're in Russia!). Not only is the food much beter than at Tandoor, but the prices are lower, too. Expect to pay about $7-15 a meal here, and they bring you free snacks while you wait. There are only two catches, however: the menu is not strictly vegetarian, so you have to order carefully, and you'll probably have to do a fair amount of walking to get to the restaurant, which is located in an akward place on Vasilievsky Island. Take heart, however: they are rumored to deliver to your door these days, although we've never tried it ourselves.
3) Govinda's Vegetarian Cafe - Address: 17 Ligovsky Prospekt - Phone: 273 77 23
Run by Russian Hare Krishnas, the cafe has a cozy, friendly atmosphere, and is located a quick walk from Ploshchad Vosstaniya. The very kind waitstaff will patiently explain any item on the menu for the not-so-fluent-in-Russian crowd. The food is delicious and surprizingly inexpensive - for example I had a curried rice and carrots dish and some water for about a dollar. I strongly recommend this place for a tasty lunch, but unfortunately it closes at 9 p.m. (21:00) so I've never had the chance to eat dinner there.
That's all :)
Take care,
Amber
