The kid, who just assumed, after a lengthy legal process, my surname seems to have acquired my luck to run into industrial-strength absurd. It is plus 30 centigrade (85F), and his school is still heated. Russian style, with no option to run it off. I’m trying to get him to take photos of naked sweating bodies. He, not having seen much beyond Russia, seems to perceive the situation as merely uncomfortable, not as transcending the bounds.

The idea is to document Moscow from my point of view in hope the compilation will be useful to a traveller of my type. I’m trying to finish that before going off to Kola.

I’ve also been adding stuff to Towns, villages, and other points of interest. The logo for the project is yet to be made up.

You may have notice me writing about prostitution. I’m doing it not only out of my natural interest in things dirty, immoral, illegal or some other way beyond but mostly because good 20% of search phrases that take people to my sites have “prostitute” or “prostitution” in them, and “Russian brides” is next in popularity. Hits transform to enquiries, and enquiries to clients, and clients to small pittance that allow me to support my miserable existence and even at times share with others. I haven’t got much of a choice here. There are a few prostitution and Russian bride related posts on where.cheap-moscow.com and I miss no opportunity to add this sort of content to www.staritsa.info.

Bykov, in my opinion, is the one destined to become a classic for capturing zeitgeist in its totality. Let me know if you see any of Bykov in English translation. I would especially recommend his Zh/D to anyone looking for the core formula of Russian-ness. Shenderovish is one of these “Russian comics” that use humour to package and fortify their message that’s anything but funny. Paperny is somehow associated with the fashionable and slightly alternative club scene.

Today’s observation is now decisions are made by Russians vs. Westerners.

No matter how trivial the reason, westerners tend to hold a discussion and implement a procedure. The discussion stage may run something like this:

- Do you want to stop to eat?
- Don’t know. How do others feel?
- May be a good idea.
- I agree.
- Where?
- What does Lonely Planet say?
- Not much. Doesn’t even mention this place.
- Let’s check with the GPS!
- ………….

The discussion itself went on for no more than 10 minutes in the real-life situation based on which I created this example. Not bad but it resulted in a decision to resort to the GPS god which indeed gave several recommendations complete with photos and ratings. My mild protest that a 3 mile drive to where the nearest coffee shop was supposed to be is likely to get us stuck in an hour-long jam on the Gorky highway was disregarded, the cafe turned out gone years ago, and the breakfast idea was scrapped because by the end of the breakfast attemps we were seriously behind the schedule. It was a working expedition and we just had to move on.

Mind you, it was an extreme case, and the group consisted of three Brits that were tense even by the standards of their own culture. As an example I took a situation of higher-than-usual intensity but the structure is typical.

I can already here someone asking why I didn’t step in. I did. I mean I tried. Have you ever been hired as a driver by Brits (or Indians, or to a lesser extent Germans)? You are there to take orders. Or to give direct answers to specific questions. “Let’s keep on going, and stop when we see something that looks good” is not the sort of thing a hired driver is allowed to say, and if he does he is not heard, the modern equivalent to being hit with a stick.

The Russian equivalent would involve neither politics (discussion) nor technology (GPS). It is likely to consist of

(A snack?)
(That’s be good.)
(OK.)

Then, with a cafe in sight, the driver would very briefly look at his companions’ faces and either stop or keep going according to their expressions. No democratic ritual. No GPS gadgets and all-knowing telephones with slide-out keyboard.

Small town Americans are, thankfully, much closer to Russians than are Europeans. And Europeans dispense with the long and clumsy process when there is a clear figure of authority, even if it’s a hired guide.

And Russians are good at decision-making when in small groups. As a nation we obviously fail, and there is an opinion out there – an opinion to which I subscribe to – that we are NOT one nation but several co-existing in once place, one time, and in one linguistic field. But this post is here to make up for the shortage of RussoPHILIA, and I think I have identified and hope managed to convey the situation when Russian do something easier than westerners, or at least Europeans.

Speaking of Europeans, I strongly recommend you read Painted in Blood by Stewart Miller in preparation for your trip to Russia. He does not write about Russia but his French observations apply even more to the Russian situation. Another – shorter – version of this book is published under the tile of Understanding Europeans.

I’ve followed Satish Gandham’s good advice and moved to LiquidWeb, mid-range VPS, with APC cache installed on the server. Page loading time dropped immediately and considerably, from 5-7 seconds at HostGator to 2-4 at LiquidWeb all else unchanged. A switch from a powerful but somewhat heavy Weaver II to Swift resulted in a further improvement of the loading speed to around one second! While I’m a hardwired conservative in my tastes and preferences, I will probably switch to Swift. Under 2 seconds loading time is tempting.

My thanks to Satish Gandham for one of the better advice since the WordPress misery phase of my life started in October or November 2011. I would also like to recommend LiquidWeb as a suitable and cost effective solution if your needs are like mine. Famous WPEngine would cost much more, plus they don’t have or at least didn’t have, last time I checked about a year ago, 24 hour support, which is an essential for a techno-peasant like me. Hostenko.com took three days to answer an enquiry, which pretty much says it all, and it seems keeping 20 sites with either of them would make internet presence prohibitively expensive.

Please note I’m not saying that LiquidWeb is “better” than other hosts I tried. HostGator is great (price and service-wise) for shared hosting. Site5.com has a remarkably easy interface and one of my associates, Marisha from Moldova, got fed up with me and my attempts to improve how things work, gave up on CMS, and went back to Site5. But in my case (about 20 sites that are either my own or under my care, 10 WordPress installations, a total of about 40GB of stuff, all serving a tiny struggling traveller support service) a move to LiquidWebseems to have done it.

So, if your sites takes 10-15 seconds to load, don’t despair. Not for this reason. Not before you try different hosts and themes and levels of service. In my case VPS, with ~70GB of disk space at $60-90 per month, seems to be appropriate. Don’t take promises of “unlimited” hosting for $7/month seriously. You can consistently get only what you pay for, minus the cost of handling. Blame the universe that consists of constants and does not usually generate something out of nothing, or modern sales and marketing style that fails to clearly describe what tool suits what job.

Biographies of polar scientists. Information searches and archive work." href="http://alexandra-goryashko.net" target="_blank">Alexandra who found this story on pre-revolutionary handguns either available or manufactured in Russia >> The text is mostly in Russian but half of the story is told by photos.

The closest I know is where to get are DISABLED TTs and Russian made Nagants. See where.cheap-moscow.com, categories Souvenirs or Military. But no, they cannot be easily revived, and doing so successfully (and the local law defines “success” very loosely: if it does “bang” once it is considered a real weapon) gets you six years in prison. Yes, merely for possession of something that can potentially make just one shot before disintegrating it is real Russian prison camp.
